To calculate the amount of paint needed, first determine the number of square feet of surface to be painted. Multiply the length of each wall by its height and add these figures together to determine the amount of surface area. Multiply the length of the room by its width to determine the surface area of the ceiling. Generally, you do not need to adjust your calculations for doors or windows. However, if these or other nonpainted surfaces account for significant wall space, you can subtract their surface area from your surface area figure. Divide the surface area by the spread rate(coverage area) of a gallon of the paint of your choice. The result will be the approximate number of gallons needed. Spreading rates are usually included on the directions panel. Remember to figure primer and finish coat requirements sperately. |
